Power Chef KDU - Competition!

Had chef competition yesterday morning at KDU!
There were 63 teams, 2 person per team.
My team is called Chefstruck, and my team mate is Hanna.
So... Firstly, they showed us a quick demo on how to make mayonnaise. There were too many people crowding around that small table, so Hanna and I missed out the first few steps. :(
Then right after the demo, we had to do it ourselves.
It was something like this (if only we watched this before we did it hands on -_-):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-_Oi8p3Mb0
Well, I guess we did some steps wrongly because after whipping and whipping and whipping till times up, THE TEXTURE WAS STILL WATERY. Pretty disappointed about it, but glad to say our presentation and decorations were awesome! :D
The next round, we had to make California Rolls, up to our creativity.
This time around it was much better! But time was too short for it to be better.
But it was great, really! :) We decorated the previous 'mayo' on the plate artistically instead of spreading it in the roll though.
That dish must have boosted our marks a lot :)
Well, after about half an hour of introducing KDU to us, we were called back into the auditorium, to our respective tables.
That was when they announced the teams that made it to the next round.
Apparently, 50/63 teams made it through, so I still had my hopes there. :)
As they announced the many many teams, I was getting a lil more hopeless... I held my hands tighter and tighter and kept praying...
But thank God, we were the last group they announced! They sure did make us worry so much! :')
I was just so happy, after such a stress in the morning! A lot more happened actually, but they all ended well afterall! :D
After the results were announced, we were forced to eat up our own California rolls. WHY?
Because many people spam wasabi in it and killed the judges! Hahaha! Well, Hanna and I sure did enjoy them! Ours were good... ;D
While eating, (a lecturer?) someone wearing KDU shirt came to take picture of our team, us posing with our thumbs up eating our delicious California Rolls. Then she 'interviewed' me and threw some questions like how was the competition, what have I learnt, etc etc. ^^
So, next week would be the next round. :)
Would be more competitive. Pray hard, do our best, and hope for the best! ♥

Thank you!

Cha Soba

In case you don't know what I'm talking about...
CHA = Green Tea; SOBA = Noodles.
Daddy saw my Facebook status yesterday and he was like... "Eh, is this how you spell 'char siew pau'? 0.o"
-__________-"
Nevermind, I went shopping today with mummy and offered to provide tonight's dinner for the family.
( Except that Jann isn't at home. :I )
So I bought the green tea noodles and sauce.
Hey, I sacrificed that money to buy and cook dinner for tonight, when I actually planned to buy my iPod silicon case and screen protector!
But well, I'm so glad they liked the food :D
It's my second time of my life eating this dish - Cold Cha Soba.
The first time I ate was when my cousin, a piano teacher, brought me to Tropicana City Mall for her student's album launch. And so she brought me for lunch at a Japanese restaurant.
I saw that on the menu and I felt like trying it since it's something new to me and it looks interesting.
So there I go. And when the food came, I starred at it literally. And asked my cousin for help like how do you eat this? .___. (haha, really.)
So she taught me :D She loves Japanese food and she knows many Japanese things - even Japanese language.
The way of eating is kinda cool. The serving includes ice cubes on the noodles and a bowl of dilute sauce (soba tsuyu).
You're supposed to dip the noodles in the sauce with your chopsticks, then eat it.
Okay, sorry I didn't take a picture of the end product of my cooking, not that it's bad, but I just don't have the right kitchenware for the food and it will totally spoil the picture - HAHA.

Peace ♥ ;)

Apple Crumble Tutorial

Made apple crumble for the first time, tasted so good I made it again on the same day!

Oh yummylicious ._. I want more, but I ran out of apples!

So awesome, and I decided to share it with everyone of you how I made mine :D
Take note that recipe is estimated and I do it according to my likings.

So here it is:

You need apples - ofcourse. I love green apples. ♥

Then half bowl of flour, a quarter bowl of oats - optional, a quarter bowl of sugar, 2 tbsp butter, and some cinammon if you like :)
I used brown sugar but white sugar is fine too.

Alright. So first, preheat oven to 190°C.

Slice the apples into your desired shape - mine's cubed.
In a pot, cook it with 3 quarter of the amount of sugar on low heat until soft. Or if you want some crunch, up to you to adjust :)
Don't really need to add water because the juice of the apple will all come out and there you get your sugar melted. But when it is cooled back, it will absorb the juice again.

Then, mix the flour, oats, sugar and butter.
I used my hands for the first round but tried using the blender for the second round.
In my opinion, I prefer hand :) Clean hands ofcourse! Haha :P
Anyway just mix them up until you get it all well mixed.
It will still look like dry flour, but when you press it, it actually sticks. If not, add little bit of butter and try again. Up to you actually :)

Okay, for the apples! Place it in an oven-proof bowl.
You can choose to sprinkle the cinammon over it or like what I did for the second round, I mixed it in the pot after cooking it, then pour it over to the bowl.

Place it in your 190°C preheated oven for about 30 minutes or till golden brown.
If you're in a rush, you can actually increase the temperature a little and shorten the time. It's more for cooking the crumble so make sure you get your apples cooked the way you want it to be!

Now, make sure you eat it warm, not hot, and don't burn your tongue!
Enjoy! ♥

{ The Art of Pie and Tart Making by Jen's Homekitchen }

Here's Aunty Jen giving a demonstration of how to make pies and tarts at MPH The Curve yesterday.
I went there with my mum and my eldest sister. =)

She demontrated 3 different pies/tartlets. Mushroom tartlets, Pecan pie and Lemon Pucker pie.
Personally love the mushroom ones most, fits my taste perfectly! :D

Here's Kadri getting his hands on the food during the demonstation.

These are the pecans. :D

This is the mushroom tartlet I was talking about. With the parsley and thyme... Goodness me everything in that tart is my favourite! The tart base is so yummy and crunchy, and the awesome creamy taste of the tart fillings.. Ahh :)

Words can't describe the feeling when you get to munch these... And the smell of it filled MPH and I bet if I was a passer by I'd be attracted by it. Haha!

Check this out - http://jenshomekitchen.blogspot.com/ for much more!

Fried Rice

Prepared these last night for this afternoon. I actually didn't have to bring the rice but I brought them ._.

This week, we're doing fried rice for cooking class. I nicely packed and brought dried chilli flakes, garlic cloves, an onion and dried parsley flakes. :) If you're wondering why did I use plastic wrap for the garlic cloves, it's because I didn't want the smell to stay in my bento container. Hee.

The onion was big. Erm no. The container is small. Haha! The two cucumbers are mini ones :D They're much more delicious than the usual big ones.

And there goes the fried rice! There are four of us in the group, myself, Marissa, Justin and Tuck Meng. Kit Ee joined us too :)

Oh chilli padi. You've added a striking colour to my food and a touch of spice that burnt my tounge for minutes!

There goes my bento for the day. Love the egg. :P If you're wondering, it's the brown sliced 'toppings' above the rice. :D

*ps. I'm so glad the knife is sharp this time! Makes life cutting food easier ;P

Krapleys!

No idea what I was going to make, made in in 1 hour. Gave up and whatever it because I just did with whatever I had and see what it turns out to be. I expected it to be another failure :B

Mum doesn't like cakes. Doesn't like creams. Doesn't like sweet stuff.
So I came up with my special dessert for her birthday - Krapleys! Goes well with Baileys ;D

Great things come when you least expected it. I was totally surprised on how they love it and commented about this lil crap I made 0.x Hee!

Why name it Krapleys? Because... It was just total crap. While making and all... No recipe. No idea how to do it. No idea what I was making. I just go with whatever I link up with. Ended up like crap to me. But tasted like total...... Awesome ;D And I was thinking whole afternoon what shall I make that goes with Baileys and pastry. Find online, nothing. So here, my masterpiece :D Krapleys! Yummy yummy!

And then now I use what pillow le? -.-
Use my baby pillow. =D
I use that to hug one. But if travel or stuff, Use for sleeping la.
That pillow since I was a baby one. So I call it my baby pillow.
Plus, its baby size wei.
Last time in AFC camp last day everyone hug it, I want to hug!!
Eih, no more cookies. T.T

When we were going to KL, the high way totally jam like mad, from my house there. So we took a different way.
The one they dug up a lot of cars one.
We saw a white van on the road that's being showered with sand.
Cut more trees, this is what we get. No benefit.
Go green la, save the environment too. They cut so many trees at Bukit Kiara wei.
Even monkeys have no more home.
Man, Bukit Kiara has got to stay still. My house is.. Just beside it -.-
Haih.. did you watch news?
I saw it. I saw it! And there's a scene showing when it was colapsing. The soil..

Banana Cream Trifle

This is what I did last night for dessert. Heh, 10pm dessert xD

Trifle without pudding.. How do you think it tasted like? xD

Wasn't as bad as I thought, but still, it's jelak food. If you eat the one in the smaller cup, it's better. It's the right amount. And you won't feel jelak.

This one, 1 cup for 2 servings. I ate half for supper and half for this morning's breakfast.
Suitable for couples xD

I had no recipe in mind, I looked around the kitchen and I used what is found.
To make them into a recipe, this is what I can do.. I'm not sure about the amount, but anyway here it is =P

Erm.. The 'banana cream trifle I made' recipe:
Ingredients>

◙ Anchor Non Dairy Whipping Cream
◙ McVites Digestives (digestive biscuit)
◙ Grape Jam
◙ Banana
◙ 1 tbsp Confectioner's sugar

◙ 1 tbsp vanilla essence

1) Prepare serving cups =D Smash 1 piece of digestive biscuit and pour it in the cup. One cup one biscuit.
2) Whip the cream. I put a tin and fill it with ice, then put the bowl inside the tin, then only pour the cream. I used very little, about half cup. Serves 4 or more.
3) While whipping the cream with an electric mixer, add the sugar and vanilla essence. You can add flavourings or colourings at this point. Make sure you whip at high speed.
4) Slice the bananas. You can slice according to the shapes you want. Slice some normal circle pieces too. Decorate the cups with it.
5) Squeeze some whip cream into the cup, then add a piece of the circle sliced banana, squeeze some whip cream again, and repeat till you reach ¾ of the cup, then pipe out some swirls, according to how you want it to look like.
6) Mix a little whipped cream and some grape jam together, put in the piping bag and squeeze out bit by bit to decorate.
7) Chill it before serving. It tastes better >.^

And phew, there you go! I listed it out xD
Don't stuff it with cream, it's bad -.- If you have pudding, wa la, use it! =D
Mix and match, be creative, enjoy!

22 September 2008 - Discovered Cookie Recipe

Yea! What a success! I'm so happy! :D
Remember my cookies? My dear cookies?
It was such a long time since I last made them.
I started making last year.
Then again this year for valentines.
And then now its back again!
I started early September.
That week, I made them with chocolate rice because my mum said she the chocolate chips are out of stock.
I followed the amount of the ingredients in the recipe paper because I forgotten how I changed it last time, as I didn't bake them for quite a while.
So... they were still the flat, but yummy cookies. Haha.
Oh, and they're kinda airy, like a lot of air, because that all raising flour is raising a bit too much hahaha.
I made some chocolate cookies too by adding on cocoa. But they're harder, you got to really crunch 'em.
So the next week after that, I made with chocolate chips.
They have shape this time ;) and I saved about 1 hour compared to the previous time.
I edited the amounts of this and thats stated in the recipe.
And this time, they're good looking and non-airy chocolate chip cookies.
But, one thing. Some of the cookies has many many many chocolate chips in it, and some has none.
Hmmmm...
Oh, and I still did some chocolate ones but added less cocoa. But still, its harder than the vanilla cookies.
So this week, I totally followed my own recipe.
And this time, I used both chocolate chips and rice, so that they're fair :)
And I reduced this, changed that, edited the heat, everything.
As I know actually many cookies recipe are basicly made from these ingredients, it's just the amount that makes the differences.
Oh, and I didn't make any chocolate cookies, as I know this recipe is specialised for my dear vanilla cookies ;P
Oh, and I saved 1½ hour compared to the first time.
Wooh, getting more efficient! ;)
Oh, and they're much less mess dude! Not like the other times, you'll see piles of this and thats unwashed ><
So after my discoveries, experiences and everything, I finally discovered the best recipe!

22 September 2008
Jesslyn Lai created her very own complete cookies recipe!
The cookies are soft yet crunchy, delicious and chocolatey, good-looking and well baked!
They're not too sweet, not too brown, not too uncooked, not so flat, not so oily, and most of all they're delicious!
I love the reactions of all of those who ate them, it was really surprising, they made me aware of this really good recipe!
Even my mum, for the really very first time, no bads at all!
She even said it's the best cookies compared to every other times I made!
Awwe, how touching! ;D

And my dear Malay friends, I promise, after raya kay?
I promise ;)

Maybe 10 years later, you'll find my cookies, chocolate truffles, cakes, cupcakes, muffins, brownies, everything in my dear shop! Hahaha seriously, it's my dream :) I can picture the design of everything, displaying all my art works. Gosh, they're wonderful :P
Thanks everybody, you all made my days really interesting and nice.
I look forward to each upcoming days with confident :)
Yes, you who is reading this now, I thank you again.
Without my dear readers, there's no today :)

Thankyou thankyou very much ;)
